Here is the finished quilt top for Violets – an Irish Chain.
Ellen made a bunch of new blocks, and then Marcela and I finished this top for Violeta yesterday. The binding will be the dark pink of the inner border, if I can squeeze enough out of what is left.
Thanks to Ellen for the fabric for the 2 borders.
The backing fabric needs to be about 56×56″, does anyone have anything suitable? I have some plain white, I think, if no one has anything else.
Hi everyone, I am back from the US after helping my parents move.
I’m only here for 3 weeks before I leave for 10 weeks!
Please can we get cracking on these quilts for Clara’s kids?
You’re welcome to come and work at my house, or work at your own place. You can come and get fabric from me and take it away to work, or use your own if you have it.
I have 3 sewing machines, cutting space for 2 people to work at once, and can have 2 irons going as well.

Ellen was here today and she’s cut out loads of new pink squares to add to the ones we already had for Violeta. She’s taken them away to sew up, but hopefully we’ll have more photos, and a finished Irish Chain quilt top soon! This one will finish up at about 54″ with 49 blocks and 2 borders.
Now – for those who like purple – let’s make a start on a quilt for Laura.
I’ve had second thoughts about what type of quilt to make for her. Rather than do a modern, no-background-fabric quilt, which I just can’t picture in my head in purple for some reason, how about a Sawtooth Star? Ellen and I were chatting this morning and it’s one of our mutual favourites.
We already have the how-to here on the blog, as we made these blocks for Mary-Ruth’s despedida! Here’s the link.
Let’s use a white or white-on-white background and any purples you have – light or dark to make the blocks. The purples can contain other colours, and Fussy Cutting the centre block is optional.

Anyone in North America, please message me offline for my parents’ address and if you can send a block or two there before the end of May, I’ll be able to include them in the final quilt. We will need 49 blocks for this one too!

Monday morning saw Maite cutting 2 1/2” strips in tan, blue and brown, and me sewing up pink and white blocks.
We’ve decided that we need more blocks for the Irish Chain for Violeta. I have plenty of white, but not a lot of pinks.
These three were in the bag with all the blocks, but if anyone local has any other links that would work, please bring them over to my house. A little more variety would be nice.
Maite cut loads of strips for Sergio’s log cabin quilt.
You can barely glimpse them under Waifur. I’ll go back to sewing once I have thrown her out of the room!

Linda Witzel has written this tutorial for our next Quilters Raffle block for Stitch Group. Come and work on it any Wednesday at Stitch Lounge, Stgo. or at home in your spare time. Blocks are due on Wednesday 12th December when we will draw the raffle!
This looks Hard, but it is an easy peasy block (good for a beginner). And it is a big block, so it will make a nice size quilt if we all make one or two.
You will need scraps of:

Cutting fabric
Center Block
You will need the 4.5” square of light fabric and 4 – 1.5” green 2 squares.
Take the green squares and draw a diagonal line on each square. This will be your sew line. These squares are small enough you can eyeball it.
Take a green square and align it with the corner of the center square, right sides together, and with the diagonal line NOT pointing to the corner. Sew the corner to the larger square following the line you marked. Do this to all four corners. Trim ¼” past the sewn line, cutting off the corners of the square. Press seams towards the center of the block and set it aside.
Large petal Block Make 4
You’ll need 2 – 1.5” white squares and 2 – 1.5” green 2 fabric square and 1 – 4.5” X 6.5” red 1 fabric.
Take the white and green squares and draw your diagonal line.
Take the green squares and align it with the corners of one end of the red rectangle, right sides together, and with the diagonal line NOT pointing to the corner. Sew along the square following the line your line. Do the same to the other end of the red rectangle with the white squares. Trim ¼” past the sewn line, cutting off the corners of the rectangle. Press seams outward and set aside.
Leaf Blocks Make 4
You will need: Green 1 fabric 1 – 4.5” square and 2 – 2.5” square
Take the white squares and draw your diagonal line.
Take the white squares and align it with the corner of the Green square, right sides together, and with the diagonal line NOT pointing to the corner. Sew along the square following your line. Do the same to the opposite corner with the other white squares. Trim ¼” past the sewn line, cutting off the corners of the rectangle. Press seams towards the dark side and set aside.
Now here is the toughest part of this block if you are not paying attention you could end up sewing the wrong diagonal. So, we’ll make 2 sets separately.
Set one
You will need: 2 – 2.5” X 4.5” red rectangles and 2 – 2.5” X 6.5” rectangles and 4 – 2.5” squares.
Take the white squares and draw your diagonal line.
Take the white squares and align it with the corner of the Green square, right sides together. This time your diagonal line will point to the left corner. Sew along the square following your line. Trim ¼” past the sewn line, cutting off the corners of the rectangle. Press seams towards the dark side and set aside.
Set two
You will need: 2 – 2.5” X 4.5” red rectangles and 2 – 2.5” X 6.5” rectangles and 4 – 2.5” squares.
You’re going to do the same thing, but your diagonal line will point to the right corner Sew along the square following your line. Trim ¼” past the sewn line, cutting off the corners of the rectangle. Press seams towards the dark side and set aside.
Once they all pressed you should have something that looks like this
Now to put the corner blocks together. This includes the leaves and smaller petals.
You will make 2 like this.
And 2 like this
Now you are ready to put the block together. This is the layout sew the blocks into rows then sew the rows together. This block measures 16.5”

It’s been some time since I won the Log Cabin blocks in the raffle, but the quilt is complete, and has been gifted.
Jackie the wonder nana left our family after more than 8 years, so I decided to get it finished so I could give her a quilt to remember us.
